  • Life Update February 2010

    It looks like the last time I updated this sucker was in April last year . . . right after I moved into my current domicile. Time flies when you’re having fun, right? Is anybody having any fun lately?

    So, what’s going on in my life right now? What’s happened in the last year?

    Short list:
    – JULY/AUGUST 2009 – mission trip to Indonesia
    – AUGUST 2009 – third daughter Anna
    – AUGUST 2009 – laid-off from M Advisory Group after ten months
    – SEPTEMBER 2009 – Ella enters second grade, Emma enters pre-K
    – OCTOBER 2009 – hired as a contingent employee at Kia Motors America after two months of unemployment
    – NOVEMBER 2009 – grandmother’s Buddhist funeral in Korea
    – FALL 2009 – first semester took four classes: Beginning Greek I, Introduction to Spiritual Theology & Formation, Theology I: Revelation and Nature of God, and Urban Mission and Ministry
    – JANUARY 2010 – first inter-term course: Church and Society
    – FEBRUARY 2010 – entered fifth semester at Talbot

    It’s been a crazy year.

  • It is Finished

    “For how long?” is the next question. We have finally completed our move. We started moving stuff in on Saturday, April 11 (special thanks to Andrew Kim and Arthur Cha). Then, we moved a little bit at a time every night thereafter. Did about two trips on Wednesday night. Then came the Big Move on Thursday (special thanks to Victor Bauhng for Wed/Thu). Friday at lunch I did a few things and then I headed off to New Orleans after church (thanks to Arthur for the ride). My mom, Simon, Jess, and Virginia came on Saturday to help do a few more trips and unpack in my absence. Sunday was quiet. Monday was quiet.

    Although I had asked my wife not to do anything on the Big Move, because she felt guilty for not doing anything, every time I turned my back, she exerted energy to move stuff around or unpack stuff when I wasn’t looking. That and the stress of the move caused her to feel pain by the end of Thursday night. The best description she could give was that the baby was “bunching up.” Called the doctor the next day and although she had gone into the office to work, she was advised to go on bedrest. I asked her to stay home from Friday bible study. She did not attend EM service on Sunday . . . only youth service so that L&M could attend Sunday School. (more…)

  • Passive-Aggressive?

    I imagine that if you were to do some quick research on this topic of passive-aggressive behavior, you would be startled to discover . . . YOU are passive-aggressive.

    Here’s the textbook definition:

    pas·sive-ag·gres·sive (p?s’?v-?-gr?s’?v)
    adj. Of, relating to, or having a personality disorder characterized by habitual passive resistance to demands for adequate performance in occupational or social situations, as by procrastination, stubbornness, sullenness, and inefficiency.

    The thing is . . . if you look at the definition a certain way, it could describe anybody. Would you guys classify me as passive-aggressive? My wife classifies me as passive-passive. (more…)

    So I was having a conversation with one of my vice presidents earlier this week. She was having issues with her computer so I had been helping her out. [BTW, does anyone know why Outlook Calendars sometimes tell you that access to the resource is denied and that you must sign out of your Windows Live ID or whatever. Can’t seem to fix the problem.] One of the things that I wanted to do was delete her cookies, so before I did so, I asked her if she saves any passwords on any websites she visits. She answered in the negatory. We got into this conversation about how it’s stupid to save your password. She was saying how for all of their technical savviness, young people are getting lazy . . . and dumb. Of course, I am paraphrasing. She said it nicer. (more…)

    I forget who gave these to me, but I found it while cleaning my room tonight. Enjoy.

    One night I had a wondrous dream
    A set of prints on the sand was seen
    The footprints of my precious Lord
    Yet mine were not along the shore

    This print is large and round and neat

  • Why can’t Koreans get along?

    On Friday, we were going through Design for Discipleship 2.1: The Life (NavPress) and we began with the section on “God’s Godness.” Question #7 tells the student that God is omniscient and that He knows what is going on in their life. So, what did I do? Being the troublemaker pastor that I am, I decided to point out the elephant in the room. I singled out one of my students and let him know that although his parents were no longer going to our church and he was going through confusing times, that God knew what was going on in his heart and that God would watch over him.   • Pastors Are Lazy or Overworked?

    Recently, I have heard members complain about lazy pastors, so I thought I would go online to find supporting articles to educate these people about the fact that pastors are not lazy. They are just overworked and under-paid/under-appreciated. Unfortunately, what I found was an overwhelming number of websites claiming that pastors are just great at making excuses. There’s an irony there, because pastors have been gifted with the ability to communicate proficiently (and they are paid to do so every Sunday). (more…)
